On January 26, 2007, during the Premier’s Summit on Literacy and Learning, Government announced a comprehensive literacy strategy, ReadNow BC. ReadNow BC seeks to address literacy challenges faced by thousands of British Columbians, from preschoolers to grandparents, in a meaningful and sustainable way. As part of ReadNow BC announcement, Government also launched a new toll-free line - 1-888-READ234, to provide access to information on literacy programs and resources for all British Columbians.
The Ministry of Education hosted the first ever Student Congress on April 2, 2007, at the Wosk Centre for Dialogue in Vancouver. The Congress focused on the theme of leadership, and provided grade 10-12 students from public, independent, and band schools with an opportunity to discuss challenges and share ideas on how to be effective leaders in their schools and communities.
